Hunter Potter “Gimme Shelter” Ross + Kramer Gallery

Hunter Potter is a multidisciplinary artist who creates whimsical paintings and sculptures that comment on the details of everyday life. Based in New York, he is currently exhibiting a new body of work entitled “Gimme Shelter” at Ross + Kramer Gallery in East Hampton.

“Gimme Shelter” explores how Potter comes of age and lives in Upstate New York as a full-time roofer. Nostalgically, he uses these memories to create characters that he described in a pronunciation with the gallery as “some of the hardest working, most innovative and resilient men” [he] could think of.”

Roofing, according to Potter, is the epitome of laborer work, where you literally put a roof on someone’s head. “You learn what the sun is capable of as it blisters your back and forearms, while providing the customer with delicious and waterproof shade,” he added. As nostalgic and light-hearted as the show is, it also details the inherent dangers that come with it, pointing to a near-fatal accident he endured in 2010 with a team of roofers.

The exhibition shows a number of new paintings and tools that have been turned into sculptures, such as: Hammerhead and Misery Loves Company. “Give me shelter” is on display at the Ross + Kramer Gallery in East Hampton until October 15.
