Owen, Gambacorta, Debbis, Lavoie, & Hovey Score GAF Roofing 150 Feature Wins at Stafford Speedway

Stafford Speedway hosted another round of Stafford Weekly Racing on Friday, August 6 with the Whelen Modified Tour also attending the GAF Roofing 150. the Late Model feature, Derek Debbis in the SK Light feature, Jeremy Lavoie in the Limited Late Model feature, and Nickolas Hovey in the Street Stock feature.

In the 40-lap SK Modified® feature event, Doug Meservey, Jr. and Michael Gervais, Jr. the first lap side by side for the lead before Meservey was clear on lap 2. Mikey Flynn was third followed by the side by side duo of David Arute and Matt Vassar for fourth with Tyler Hines and Chase Dowling behind them.

Gervais made a move to the inside of Meservey and took the lead on lap 5. Flynn was still third, but Hines was now fourth with Dowling and Arute behind him. Just behind Arute was a side-by-side battle between Stephen Kopcik and Keith Rocco in a battle for seventh place. After some shuffling, Gervias and Meservey still had completed the two lead cars with 14 laps, but Hines was now in third with Dowling fourth and Flynn fifth. Rocco and Todd Owen were side by side for sixth with Kopcik just behind them in eighth. Vassar spun out of Turn 4 to bring out the warning flag with 19 laps completed.

Gervais took the lead at the restart with Meservey in second and Owen in third. Dowling was fourth with Rocco fifth. Hines was sixth, followed by Kopcik, Michael Christopher, Jr., Marcello Rufrano and Flynn. Bryan Narducci spun on the exit of Turn 2 to bring caution back with 23 laps completed.

Gervais again took the lead on the restart as Owen passed Meservey to take second. Rocco finished fourth behind Meservey with Kopcik fifth. Hines was sixth in line followed by Dowling, Christopher, Flynn and Rufrano. Owen chased Gervais until lap 38, when he made his attempt to take the lead. Owen then led Gervais to the checkered flag to take his second straight win of the 2021 season. Meservey finished third with Rocco and Kopcik completing the top-5.

In the 30-lap Late Model feature event, Rick Lanagan in turn spun 4 before a lap could be completed to bring out the warning flag. John Blake took charge with Paul Varricchio, Jr. second. Andrew Molleur was third in line followed by Paul Arute and Michael Wray. Molleur was second to Varricchio on lap 5 with Blake still out front and Arute fourth. Kevin Gambacorta sat side by side with Wray for the fifth on lap 5 and he took fifth on lap 6. Tom Butler followed Gambacorta through Wray to move into sixth and let Wray drop back to seventh. Rob Dow spun in the middle of turns 3+4 to bring out the caution with 7 laps completed.

The field completed one lap after the restart before Arute spun into Turn 1 and picked up Tom Fearn’s car with Tyler Leary and Rob Dow both also involved to bring the caution back out. Molleur took the lead from Blake at the restart with Wray, Al Saunders and Andrew Durand behind him. Blake drifted onto the track at the exit of Turn 2 on Lap 11 and he fell back several spots, but caution flew for a spin on the backstretch through Trace Beyer, leaving Blake second again before the next restart.

Molleur took the lead at the restart with Varricchio in second. Gambacorta moved up to third with Durand fourth and Michael Bennett fifth in line. Tom Fearn and Arute collided entering Turn 3, causing Al Saunders to reverse into the wall of Turn 3, but he was able to pull his car into the pit lane and the race remained green. The warning came out with 13 laps completed for Dow, who came to a stop at the pit lane entrance.

Back under green, Molleur took the lead with Varricchio and Gambacorta side by side for second. Bennett was fourth with Durand right behind him in fifth. Durand passed Bennett to move into fourth on lap 15 while Gambacorta went around Varricchio to move into second while Molleur remained in the lead. Caution came back with 16 laps complete when Darrell Keane and Blake collided as Blake circled in Turn 3.

Molleur took the lead at the restart after holding off a challenge from Gambacorta. Varricchio was third with Bennett and Durand side by side for fourth. A multi-car incident broke out on the exit of Turn 4 to bring caution back with 18 laps completed.

At the restart, Fearn and Lanagan’s cars snagged and went into the wall of Turn 1 to immediately bring the warning back out. Varricchio fell out of form on the restart and fell out of the top-10 from third, while Molleur took the lead, followed by Gambacorta, Durand, Bennett and Keane.

Gambacorta and Molleur began to pull back from the trio of Durand, Bennett, and Keane and Gambacorta searched high and low for a way around Molleur and take the lead in the race. Gambacorta made his move on lap 26 with a pass into turns 1 + 2 to take the lead.

The action behind Gambacorta and Molleur turned wild on lap 28 as Bennett tried to make a move for third but fell out of shape and fell back to sixth while Durand stayed third. Keane, Durand and Wray went 3-walk on lap 29 with Keane finishing third with Durand fourth and Wray fifth. Up front, Molleur was unable to catch Gambacorta as Gambacorta clinched his third win of the 2021 season. Keane finished third and Durand and Wray rounded out the top-5.

In the 20-lap SK Light event, Steven Chapman took the early lead with Norm Sears, Amanda West, Tyler Chapman and Chris Matthews behind him. Brian Sullivan went around to sixth on lap 3 alongside Bob Charland and he pulled to the outside of Matthews on lap 4 to fight for fifth. Sullivan was fifth and he continued his charge forward as he passed West and was third on lap 6. Steven Chapman and Sears were still the two leaders but Derek Debbis was now fourth behind Sullivan with West fifth with 8 laps completed. Josh Carey took a hard knock into the wall of Turn 1 to bring out the red and yellow flags with 10 laps completed.

Sullivan took the lead from Chapman at the restart, but by the time the cars got back on the line to complete lap 11, Debbis had taken the lead from Sullivan. Steven Chapman was third in line with his brother Tyler fourth and Charland fifth. Anthony Forino in turn spun 4 along with Mark Bakaj to bring the caution back with 13 laps completed.

Debbis took the lead at the restart with Sullivan in second. Steven Chapman was third with Charland fourth and Alexander Pearl climbed to fifth, dropping Tyler Chapman back to sixth in line. Debbis led Sullivan to the checkered flag to take his fifth win of the 2021 season. Steven Chapman finished third with Charland and Pearl completing the top-5.

In the 20 lap Limited Late Model event, RJ Surdell took the early lead with Matt Scappini going around Gary Patnode to slide into second on lap 2. Devon Jencik was fourth behind Patnode, while Alexandra Fearn quickly moved into fifth. Jencik and Fearn both got around Patnode on lap 4 to move up to third and fourth, dropping Patnode back to fifth while Surdell continued to hold the lead.

Jencik took second from Scappini on lap 5 and caution flew by 6 laps when Fearn and Jencik made contact and spun on the front stretch.

Surdell took the lead on the restart, but by the time the cars hit the backstretch, Surdell’s car seemed to temporarily slow the pace, allowing Scappini to take the lead. Jeremy Lavoie and Surdell were side by side for second with Patnode and Mike Hopkins side by side for fourth. Caution came back with 9 laps completed when David Shinder and Kevin Crosby converged at Turn 4, with Crosby making a draft through the grass and Shinder spinning.

Surdell and Scappini went side by side for the lead at the restart, with Lavoie briefly taking things out of Turn 4 to complete lap 10. Lavoie came out with the lead on lap 11 with Fearn moving into second. Jencik was third with Surdell dropping to fourth and Scappini dropping to fifth. Patnode spun on the backstretch while Damian Palardy also went out of shape to bring the caution back with 12 laps completed.

Lavoie took the lead back under green with Fearn on his rear bumper in second. Jencik was third in line followed by Surdell and Scappini. Fearn made a move to the inside of Lavoie on lap 15 to take the lead. Jencik followed Fearn at Lavoie to bring Lavoie back to third just before Scappini and Hopkins both hit the wall of Turn 2 to bring the caution back with 15 laps completed.

Contact between Matt Clement and Surdell caused Surdell to spin 3 in turn on the restart before a lap could be completed. Clement was sent to the back of the field by Stafford officials for contact.

The restart saw another walk of 3 when Jencik walked 3 with Fearn and Lavoie for the lead. Lavoie came out in the lead while Jencik was second and Fearn dropped back to third. Hopkins was fourth and Clement went around Palardy to take fifth on lap 18. Hopkins was third to Fearn on lap 19, but Fearn came right back on the last lap to recapture third. Lavoie led Jencik to the checkered flag to take his first win of the 2021 season. Fearn, Hopkins and Matt Clement rounded out the top-5 behind Lavoie and Jencik. On inspection after the race, Jencik’s car was found to have illegal spindles and he was disqualified from second place, putting Lavoie, Fearn, Hopkins, Clement and Palardy in the new top-5.

In the 20-lap Street Stock event, Travis Downey took the lead on the green and set the early pace. Jason Finkbein and Tyler Trott both got into the wall of Turn 2 to bring out the caution with 1 lap completed.

Downey took the lead again at the restart and Nickolas Hovey walked 3 to move into second place. Bert Ouellette was third with Travis Hydar and Adrien Paradis, III side by side for fourth with Frank L’Etoile, Jr. on sixth and Chris Meyer on seventh.

L’Etoile and Meyer both passed Paradis on lap 5 to move into fourth and fifth, while Hovey went inside Downey on lap 6 but couldn’t complete the pass as Downey held onto the lead. Hovey made another move to take the lead on lap 7 and this time the pass stalled as he took the lead. Meyer moved up to second in the battle behind Hovey with Ouellette third, Hydar fourth and L’Etoile fifth.

Halfway through the race, Hovey was still in the lead, followed by Meyer, Ouellette, Hydar and L’Etoile. L’Etoile got around Hydar and was fourth on lap 13 and Paradis was fifth from Hydar on lap 15 while Meyer still chased Hovey for the lead.

Meyer took the lead from Meyer on lap 18 and he held the lead to the white flag. Hovey reached the inside of Meyer as he came out of Turn 2 on the last lap and he was able to complete the pass in Turns 3+4 and that move enabled L’Etoile to take second as Hovey took his second win of into the 2021 season. Meyer finished third with Ouellette and Paradis completing the top-5.
