People of the 10th anniversary Top Solar Contractors list: Jason Peterson, JSunPV

For the 10th anniversary of the Top Solar Contractors list, we’re sharing Q&As with the people who make the industry run every day. Read more interviews here.

How did you get started in solar energy?

My start in solar energy was sort of a calling, or a product of my resigning from a comfortable corporate job, followed by a few months of soul searching. In short, I saw a world hungry for electricity, technology and progress that would soon embrace a major source of renewable energy, and I wanted to be part of that transformation.

What is your favorite part of working in the solar industry?

Honestly, my favorite part of the industry is growth. My personal/professional path in solar has allowed me to grow in the early stages of the local industry, while simultaneously growing equipment and community interest in quantity and quality to create a progressive, sustainable synergy.

What has surprised you most about the solar industry in the past 10 years?

The impressive fact about solar energy is the ‘internal agenda’. From my point of view, it turned out that no matter what happened in the political and economic market, we were always growing and moving forward. It’s like there’s no stopping it. We flowed with what the universe gave us.

What are your solar predictions for the next 10 years?

My optimistic predictions are: batteries at every solar installation, instant solar power that allows, multi-junction solar cells with efficiencies greater than 50%, and pollinator-friendly, utility-scale sheep-grazing farms with two-sided modules running on dual-axis trackers. Realistically, utility-controlled smart meters were used to limit the benefits of solar homeowners, “jumbo” solar panels on rooftops, a race to the bottom of value/cost/quality among local contractors.

How did you/your company stand out in the past year?

I would say that JSunPV stands out by doing more complex projects that other solar companies might avoid. Last year, with the help of a local master electrician and his crew, we installed a residential system consisting of an 8-ft high, 80-ft long engineering retaining wall with 15 kW bifacial PV on two dual-axis trackers attached to a 200A whole home backup with 20 kWh batteries.

How do you help improve the industry?

JSunPV works to improve the industry by choosing the best materials and following the best practices for installation. We offer competitively priced systems to keep the market value high. We take our time and get it right, while providing an educational, consultative approach to sales communications.

What opportunities does the solar industry offer for entry-level positions that you may not find in other sectors?

An energy revolution is underway – opportunities abound. With the right mindset and actions you can make a positive change – training, motivation and some assembly required. Don’t wait, apply today.
