At least 20 people have been killed in a massive earthquake that hit Pakistan on Thursday. Officials said the earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale hit southern Pakistan in the early hours. Officials added that many of the victims died when roofs and walls collapsed. Among the 20 dead were a woman and six children, according to a senior provincial government official. Provincial Interior Minister Mir Zia Ullah Langau said rescue efforts were underway. Balochistan’s provincial disaster management authority has said the death toll could rise. The worst affected area was the remote mountain town of Harnai in Balochistan. Lack of paved roads, electricity and cell phone coverage have hampered rescue efforts in the area. The earthquake was also felt in Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake struck at around 3 a.m. at a depth of about 20 km.
