Sea Island Habitat solicits $100,000 in donations to fix 30 leaking roofs
A Johns Island nonprofit that helps low-income and senior citizens make home repairs is asking $100,000 in contributions to repair or replace 30 leaking and structurally unsound roofs by the end of the year.
Sea Island Habitat for Humanity founded Roof Repair Rally to help some of South Charleston County’s 78 residents awaiting roof repairs and many others in need of other qualifying work.
SC Coastal Counties account for more than half of all home sales statewide
The agency has raised $52,000 in additional commitments and is working with builders, roofers and volunteers for assistance. This year, Sea Island has completed 43 home repairs so far.
The nonprofit points to an increase in need due to delays caused by a partial shutdown of operations in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, a loss of many volunteers and the sharp rise in wood and material costs.
Nearly 400 homes planned for Ravenel . development
In part of a 600-acre area west of Ravenel, 381 new homes could be built along US Highway 17 and New Road. The plot also includes a commercial hub for future development and a large area set aside for waste collection.
